Support structured literacy with HMH Into Reading First Grade Irregular Word Cards that target high-frequency words with unpredictable spellings. Cards are designed to teach both permanently irregular words and temporarily irregular words. Permanently irregular words include letter–sound correspondences that are unique or rarely seen. Temporarily irregular words include patterns not yet taught. The format promotes phoneme–grapheme mapping, highlights the tricky part, and reinforces accurate reading and spelling.
Use during whole-group modeling, small-group lessons, literacy centers, intervention, and take-home practice. Routines include saying the sounds, identifying the irregular part, reading in a phrase or sentence, and writing to apply learning. Recommended prep: print on cardstock, laminate for durability, and sort by skill or unit for quick rotations and data-friendly progress checks.
